Blender Features: What To Look For

I'm not much of a "Betty Crocker" type, so when it comes time to buy new kitchen appliances, I feel like a fish out of water. I usually end up spending hours online looking at product specs only to have to look up what parts of those mean and how important they are. I hate that. Shopping for a new blender is no different. There are so many of them out there that a person could easily get lost in the mix. So to simplify it a little bit, I've put together a list of important features you should look for in a blender.

Easy To Clean

Ease of cleanup is a BIG thing I look for. Not all blender containers are dishwasher safe. I'm fine with that, as long as that doesn't mean they are difficult to wash. Many of them advertise that you can just put hot water in the jug with a little soap, put the lid on and turn it all. Cleanup complete. That doesn't sound too bad. I think I can handle that.

Power

I've read several articles that mention the power of the blender. The more power the blender has, the more easily it can make your smoothies, the more smooth they will be, etc. I recommend finding a blender that has at least 900 watts. You may not think you need that much power, but I promise you won't regret it.

Quality

You want to find a blender feels well made and of a high quality. Sure, we can go get one off any chain store for probably less than , but will it last? Will it hold up to what you need it to do? Do you want to replace it every year (if not more)? I'd rather spend extra money and buy a blender that I feel like is high quality and can take my high use demands.

A high quality blender should feel well put together, and feel strong. One of the best blenders I've come across is the Vitamix 1700 Turbo Blend 4500. Many of the reviews that I came across in my research were very complimentary of the quality of the Vitamix blender.

Locking Lid

I REALLY like the locking lids. I have to admit, I've turned a blender on and made a huge mess when the lid flew off. Since then, I'm a fan of the locking lids.

Jug Size

Make sure that whatever blender you end up purchasing comes with a jug that is more than what you will need. You'll regret it if you don't. If you get one that you think is just the right size, it will almost always end up being too small at some point. Go for the bigger jug. Better safe than sorry!

A blender is a kitchen appliance used to mix ingredients or puree food. A blender operates via motor powered blades that rapidly rotate and chop, puree and mix foods. These appliances are an excellent kitchen tool that can save time and energy.

Blender Do's

Do use a continuous blend button or function when making drinks, cocktails, dressings, marinades and other foods and liquids that need mixing.

Do use the pulse button and function when blending foods that only need short bursts of power, like nuts and ice.

Do use the pulse button and function to blend drinks containing ice cubes or frozen fruit.

Do cut food into cubes, between 1 to 2 inches square, to achieve a smooth, even blended result.

Do fill the blender jar only 1/4 to 1/2 full when blending thicker mixtures or purees. This will help the motor and blades work more efficiently.

Do place liquid ingredients in the blender first, and then blend solid ingredients second, when using several different foods and liquids.

Do scrape down the sides of the blender jar with a spatula when blending thick or dry mixtures.

Blender Don'ts

Do not blend heavy mixtures for more than 10 seconds.

Do not run the blender continuously for more than 1 to 2 minutes.

Do not operate the blender unless the jar's lid is securely on top.

Do not place anything into the blender while the motor is running.

Do not use the blender jar as a storage container

Do not remove the blender jar from the base or housing unit while the it is operating. Always make sure the blender is off before removing the jar.

Do not overload your blender with too many ingredients in the jar at one time.

Plan a Successful Pool Party

Spring has sprung and it's time to get in shape for beach season. But, you don't have to go to the beach to have fun by the water. Consider throwing a pool party in your own back yard or at the neighborhood clubhouse. As long as there is clear water, hot food, and cool tunes, you've got a party.

While successful pool parties can just happen, they're better with a little planning.

Decide on a weekend when all your friends can attend. Send out some invitations at least three to four weeks in advance of the event so you can gauge the turnout. Invite more people than you believe will attend so that you get at least ten to fifteen people to show up.

If you intend to use the neighborhood pool in the clubhouse, the location will have to be reserved so that the pool is free on that day for you and your guests. Most public places prohibit alcohol consumption, so if you plan on serving drinks, you'll be better off at a private residence.

Now that the invitations are out and the venue is set, it's time to decide on a menu. For a pool party, the kids and some adults will be swimming and mingling around the pool area. That gives you time to prepare a meal and serve as bartender. On a hot day, keep the fare light so that everyone is still able to swim and have fun without feeling like they want to go to sleep. Save any mixed drinks for the time when the meal is served. We don't want any mishaps in the pool area.

To cool down on a hot day, serve some punch or virgin frozen drinks. There are wonderful margarita dispensers available for those frozen drinks by the pool. The secret to this paragon of party drink perfection is the combination of shaved ice and other ingredients to make each drink unforgettable.

A good meal for a pool party includes some cooking on the grill. Instead of big steaks and pork chops, give your guests a sampling of Swedish kebobs served over rice - add extra flavor by using seasoned skewers. The flavor of mango, garlic, cinnamon, and lime come through to season the meat inside and out. Use the skewers for your meat and vegetable kebobs as well as fruity dessert skewers. Seasoned salts add zest to potato salad, macaroni salad, and other side dishes.

So, for your next pool party, don't forget:

o Invitations (three to four weeks prior)

o Bar setup for drinks and punch

o Grill ready to make kebobs or whatever meat you decide to serve

o Fun accessories for the pool (balls, rafts, etc.)

o Utensils, plates, and napkins for the food

o Music to dance the afternoon and night away

Have fun and enjoy your summer!
